The year of 2020 has been difficult for everyone. This year, people have to go through one of the greatest ordeals in history, namely the COVID-19 pandemic. It has spread to almost all countries in the world and changed so many aspects of life.

The pandemic and its impacts also affect the educational sector, notably Universitas Indonesia. As part of the efforts to combat the pandemic and anticipate its worst possibilities, Universitas Indonesia has taken multiple steps. The face-to face learning process in the classroom was suspended and replaced by Distance Learning. Likewise, work-from-office has morphed into work-from-home arrangement for lecturers and staff. Universitas Indonesia strictly implements the COVID-19 preventive health protocol on a daily basis, applied without any exception to all campus community members.

On an even grander scale and scope, Universitas Indonesia has also contributed to efforts of pandemic handling in a variety of ways. Various ideas, thoughts, knowledge, workforce, and other resources are mobilized to collaborate with many parties, including the Central Government, Local Government, and other institutions. Universitas Indonesia is fully aware that its work and contributions as an educational institution shall be increasingly required in this kind of situation.

Moreover, even though the pandemic still lingers as this report is written, Universitas Indonesia continues to be committed to making numerous efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We continuously nourish such enduring commitment.

Universitas Indonesia’s commitment to achieve the SDGs is also well appreciated by an influential international Higher Education Ranking Agency, Times Higher Education (THE) in its 2020 World University Rankings. In 2021, Universitas Indonesia was bestowed the 85th Best University in the World, which is considered capable of providing Broad Impact on the Nation’s Social and Economy through Research, Teaching, and Community Service Activities. The ranking process itself surely puts emphasis on the assessment of the commitment to keep up with SDGs aspects. This achievement is indeed inseparable from the determination in realizing its vision, namely “Establishing Universitas Indonesia as an independent and superior university that is capable of resolving problems and challenges nationally and globally, as an elite university in Southeast Asia.”

Universitas Indonesia would like to express its sincere gratitude to all parties who have opened themselves up to a collaboration in working toward solutions to the more challenging national and global problems.

The SDGs Initiatives lists at Universitas Indonesia contribute to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim of promoting synergies between research activities and ensuring the social impact of value created by these initiatives.
